SEO in 2026 looks different from SEO in 2022

If you last thought about SEO a few years ago, the rules have quietly changed.

Two things have happened in the last 18 months that have rewritten the playbook:

  • Google now answers the question directly. Roughly 59% of Google searches now end without a click. The user gets the answer from the AI-written summary at the top of the page. If your site isn’t the source that summary quotes, you’re invisible for that search.
  • ChatGPT and Perplexity have become research tools. When someone’s choosing a supplier, an advisor, a hotel or a service, they’re now just as likely to ask an AI tool as they are to Google. AI tools pull from different signals than Google does. Most websites aren’t built to be found this way.

Traditional SEO still matters. It’s the foundation AI search pulls from. But the game has shifted. Research queries increasingly get answered inside AI tools before anyone clicks a link, and purchase-intent queries are starting to follow.

Call it GEO, call it AI SEO, call it search for 2026. It’s what proper SEO actually looks like today.

What modern SEO involves

Four things, done together. They only work as a system.

  1. Technical SEO foundations
Schema markup, site speed, structured data, clean URLs, proper internal linking, Core Web Vitals. The things Google (and AI tools) need to understand your site properly. Most websites fall over here. We fix it first.
  2. Content that ranks and gets cited
Content used to just need to rank. Now it needs to be quotable by an AI tool as well. Different writing discipline. We do it, or we train your team to.
  3. Authority signals
The things that make Google and AI tools trust your business: reviews, citations, directory listings, expert attribution, E-E-A-T signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust). Built systematically, not hoped for.
  4. Measurement across Google and AI
Google Search Console tells you half the story. The other half is whether you’re being cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. We test monthly.

Digital Marketing

Why Jersey businesses need a different approach

Jersey’s market is unique. Small island, high competition, discerning customers who expect quality. Generic digital marketing playbooks designed for mainland markets don’t account for how people search, buy, and make decisions here.

Jersey businesses are competing online against UK companies with bigger budgets and bigger teams. The smart move isn’t to outspend them. It’s to out-think them.

We’re based on the island, at Digital Jersey’s hub in St Helier. We understand the local market. But the majority of our clients are UK-based and international, which means you get mainland-grade strategy with genuine local knowledge.

Devstars (Jersey) Limited doesn’t charge VAT to UK clients, which gives you a concrete commercial advantage on every engagement.

Here’s how a typical engagement runs:

  1. Discovery call (15 minutes)
A quick conversation to understand your business, your goals, and whether we’re the right fit. No sales pitch. If we can’t help, we’ll tell you straight.
  2. GEO and search audit
We dig into your current digital presence, your competitors, and your AI visibility. This gives us the evidence to build a strategy grounded in data, not guesswork.
  3. Prioritised roadmap
You get a clear plan with quick wins you can action immediately and a longer-term strategy that builds sustainable growth. Everything ties back to commercial outcomes, not vanity metrics.
  4. Ongoing partnership
We work as an extension of your team. Regular check-ins, transparent reporting on metrics that matter, and strategic guidance as your business evolves.

FAQs

What is GEO and how is it different from traditional SEO?
down

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) combines traditional SEO with optimisation for AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked in Google results. GEO gets you recommended and cited by AI tools, which is where an increasing number of purchasing decisions start.

Why do I need GEO when traditional SEO has worked well?
down

With 59% of searches now ending without a click, users are completing their research within AI tools before visiting websites.

Traditional SEO alone misses where your customers are increasingly making decisions. GEO ensures visibility across both traditional and AI-powered search.

How do you optimise for AI search engines like ChatGPT?
down

We optimise content structure for AI citation, implement enhanced E-E-A-T signals, create AI-friendly content formats, and build authority signals that AI tools trust when making recommendations.

This includes structured data, expert attribution, and content architecture designed for extraction.

What are E-E-A-T signals and why are they important for AI search?
down

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust. AI tools prioritise content demonstrating these qualities when making citations and recommendations.

Practically, this means named authors, verifiable credentials, real case studies, and consistent information across platforms.

How do you measure success?
down

We track brand mention frequency in AI tools, citation analysis across platforms, traditional search metrics, brand search volume growth, multi-platform visibility, and conversion quality.

The metric that matters most is whether your digital presence is generating more qualified enquiries.

Will Technical GEO hurt my current Google rankings?
down

No. GEO optimisations enhance rather than replace traditional SEO. The strategies that work for AI search, clear structure, authoritative content, comprehensive schema, also improve traditional search performance.

How long does it take to see results?
down

Brand recognition improvements typically appear within 4–6 weeks, with significant AI visibility gains within 3–4 months. Traditional search benefits often improve simultaneously. We won’t promise page one in a week. Anyone who does is either lying or cutting corners.

Do you only work with Jersey businesses?
down

Not at all. The majority of our clients are UK-based. But we live and work in Jersey, we understand the local market, and we’re keen to help more island businesses compete effectively online.

Devstars (Jersey) Limited doesn’t charge VAT to UK clients, which is a genuine commercial advantage.

What’s the biggest Technical GEO mistake businesses make?
down

Ignoring AI search entirely and focusing only on traditional SEO whilst competitors build advantages in AI visibility.

The first-mover window for GEO is roughly 12–18 months before larger agencies catch up. Businesses that move now will have a head start that’s difficult to close.

What does it cost?
down

It depends on what you need. Digital marketing retainers start at £10k per year. GEO audit and strategy projects start at £8k. We’ll scope the work properly before quoting, so you know exactly what you’re getting. No hidden fees, no lock-in contracts.
